We have a strong male demographic and Janeway managed to be somebody who is the ideal blend of authority, command, and believability as a captain, and yet was not threatening to the male audience. They accept her and they like her. Kate also managed to endow the role with a lovely femininity. She’s attractive, she’s nurturing, she’s sensitive, she’s caring. She really owns the whole package, and I am enormously respectful of what she brought to the character.

Jeri Taylor on the fine line that Kate Mulgrew constantly walked; taken from The Fifty-Year Mission (via mollybecameanengineer)
