Just finished watching Resolutions, Coda, Shattered, The Fight, and then parts of Scorpion, Worst Case Scenario, and countless others.
…I look at all these little moments. Janeway and Chakotay moments. A touch on the shoulder (Or chest…or cheek…). A shared look that goes on in silence for more than 5 seconds. Conversations that have nothing to do with the story other than to show a light-hearted time between the two.
I notice that for many away missions, Chakotay and Janeway always pair up by themselves.
All those dinners in Chakotay or Janeway’s quarters. Innocent little things. With flowers. And dimmed lights. And candles. Just the two of them.
And then more specific moments. Like the time in “The Q and the Gray”, when Chakotay says in response to his finding out about Q’s proposal: "I know I don’t have any right to feel this way, but this bothers the hell out of me.“
Or the time in “The 37’s”: “I’m not sure I want to go in.” says Janeway. Chakotay responds, “No matter what happens, we’ll make it. Remember that.”
Or in “Future’s End, for God’s sake… Janeway: “I don’t know what my relatives were doing this far back in history. For all I know she could be my great, great, great…great grandmother.” Chakotay: "She does have your legs!“
“According to my calculations neither of us have eaten since last night. Join me for dinner?” – Chakotay (Scorpion, Part One)
“If that moment comes we’ll face it together and we’ll make the right decision. You’re not alone, Kathryn.” – Chakotay (Scorpion, Part One)
“Three years ago I didn’t even know your name… today I couldn’t imagine a day without you.” – Janeway (Scorpion, Part One)
“You’d better get going.“ – Janeway “Right, I don’t want to be late.” – Chakotay "Just be home before midnight.“ – Janeway "Yes, ma’am.” – Chakotay (In the Flesh)
….Countless more are in my computer. Just little bits of dialogue, that could be completely overlooked.
I’m not even going to go into “Resolutions” or “Coda”. Those two episodes speak for themselves.
We have two amazing people who have such a strong chemistry together. Hintings of something between them continues throughout the entire series. They keep building, and no one can forget the evidence of them literally stranded on a planet together, or Chakotay breaking up over Janeway’s body, or the cute little smiles that pass between them.
And to boot, Janeway’s fiancee goes and moves on, leaving her absolutely single.
They are absolutely perfect for each other.
………………….
And then they go and shove Chakotay with Seven of Nine.
My only response is: What the hell, Voyager. What the hell.
(Or, as Tuvok would say, “It is highly illogical.”)
