My name is Hannah, and I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer last year, at just 23 years old.

Thankfully, I am nearing the end of my treatment and prospects are good.

Unfortunately, since I have been sick and unable to work, my savings have dwindled. I now have little to no money, just enough to pay my credit card bills each month.

I am also stuck living with my parents, and our relationship is extremely toxic. My fiance and I desperately want to be able to move to the city together, but I cannot hope to do so without some money.

So this is what makes Janeway stick out from the other captains…

In the episode Deadlock, there is a scene where everything is going to shit. The crew is battered and the ship is just falling to pieces. There is a moment where Tuvok lists all the things going wrong basically just saying “Captain, everything is shit”. But then he pauses with a lot of emotion for a Vulcan and informs the Captain that “Ensign Wildman’s baby did not survive”. Janeway immediately allocates jobs to everyone and puts Chakotay in charge. She starts to walk away saying “I need to talk to Ensign Wildman…” but another hit happens and plans change.

Any other show, the Captain would have been like “Oh god what terrible shame” and gone on with addressing the pressing ship issues. I do believe that the other captains would have addressed it the scene after and clearly gutted when being informed of the a child’s death. But Janeway stops everything. In the midst of chaos she is driven to go comfort her crewmen at that moment. 

She’s like “The ship nearly falling to pieces is an everyday occurrence. My crew can handle that. But someone losing a child, a new born at that, that is something never to be ignored. No crewman will grieve alone on this ship. So help me god!”

That’s why I love Janeway.
