“Do you like it, sweet pea?” Chakotay asks, grinning as he watches his daughter’s round little face as she tries to figure out how to chew her first frozen mouthful of vanilla ice cream. “Once you’re older, you can graduate to coffee ice cream like Mommy.” Kathryn laughs, leaning back against the railing of the beach house’s porch, the sound blending with the cawing of seagulls overhead.
“Mommy,” says Edna reflectively, staring at the bowl sitting on the porch deck in front of her. Then, before Chakotay can react, she reaches out and grabs a handful of ice cream in her fist, leaning over to smear it lovingly into Kathryn’s hair.
For a moment, the three sit frozen on the deck. Then Kathryn reaches out, quick as a rabbit, scooping a much larger handful and smearing it across the front of Chakotay’s shirt.
Edna shrieks with delight as her father groans, “Eddi, now look what you started!” He reaches for the ice cream in turn, but his daughter is quicker, grabbing the bowl and upending it directly onto her father’s head.
Kathryn doubles over laughing as Chakotay chases their little girl around the porch. Catching her up in his arms, he threatens jokingly, “Well, now that the whole family’s a mess, I guess it’s time for a bath!”
Instead of carrying Edna into the house, however, he heads down the porch stairs, running across the beach and directly into the surf. Still laughing, Kathryn follows them.
